Giles Corey is the solo project of Dan Barrett of Have A Nice Life. After nearly killing himself, he started this project. This 2011 self-titled album is slow, dark, and heavy. Imagine Have A Nice Life but acoustic and you’re on the right track. The subject matter is mostly about death and/or suicide. Sometimes Dan’s very blunt about how he says something, like in the track I’m Going To Do It. A variety of instruments and sounds are used, including guitar, piano, drums, and keyboard, plus a lot of fuzzy noise. This album is very grim. Raw and lo-fi, I’m not sure if just anyone could handle listening through it without feeling a sense of melancholy.
The album is relatively lengthy at nearly an hour. If you’re a fan of HANL, I’m sure you’d love this as well. In some ways, it feels more complete than most of HANL’s work, with a wider variety of rhythms and styles. There’s not much more I can say. The album’s gloomy, depressing, raw, and heavy. It’s not an album for everybody, but if you’re into the niche, it’s a great album to listen to.
Just finished listening to this album, it’s creepy as fuck… Very good, though.
